Hopeful
as always, he waited at the edge of the shadow. A delicate flutter in the cool morning air
and the garden was alive once again. Pale as swan's down, she stood hip deep in dandelion
silk. His greatest fear was that she might reject his suit. She was one of the Fae Royal,
and his house, though equal to her's, was nary as old. Also, it was said, she was timid
and easily frightened. Thus was born the plan. He would find a way to enjoy her company,
befriend her and then, when the time was right, he would take his normal form.
Though
Fenella had always disliked her name, it suited her. Her aunt said it meant white
shoulders. Well, perhaps, but she disliked it nonetheless. She wished for a name
befitting her mood. If not for her station among the clan, she would wish to explore
the world. Climb tall mountains and drift down mysterious rivers. She knew what the others
said of her family. They didn’t know the true Fenella.
Deliberately brushing against
the down, causing it to catch on the breeze, she glided through the drifting, delicate
cloud and laughed at the sun. A sudden darting shape detached itself from the trees.
Fenella delighted at the beautiful little creature. The tiny bird boldly landed upon
her wrist. Bright eyes captured hers and needle sharp talons grasped tightly. She laughed
and launched it away from her with a wave of her arm. As she danced among the early summer
blossoms, the playful thing soared high above and swooped low in the arms of the wind.
From where did it come? Fenella had often felt eyes peering from the shadows, though
she had supposed they belonged to the grand young deer that had recently joined her
mornings in the garden, or perhaps they belonged to her intended.. He must be as curious
about her as she was about him.
The spinners and weavers of gossip whispered he was
worthy, though reputed to be a bit wild. She would have to watch that one. His mother
had tried, poor thing, but the father...well...suffice to say the apple hadn’t fallen
far from the tree.
Each morning with the beautiful buck at her side, before her duties
called her away, she enjoyed the daring and wild company of the strange creature. It
often cocked a side glance her way, as if to encourage her to equal daring feats of
flight. She found it charming, yet...there was something else sparkling in those bright
eyes.
One crisp late summer morning, the garden was unusually quiet. Perryn, forgoing
his disguise this day, wandered through the fading flowers. He had hoped to meet Fenella
as himself and present his suit. Oddly, that other creature and unwelcome competition for
Fenella’s attention was also absent. The day seemed less bright somehow. Just as the last
shadow joined its neighbor and the darkness was almost complete, he left the empty
garden.
Had he remained a moment longer he would have heard a distant call and answering
laugh as there, in the final moments of day, his intended and a wild falcon, their wings
beating as matched hearts, disappeared into the stars.
