Despite repeated reminders that it was time for all good little girls to go to sleep, the child knelt transfixed, at the window. Chin in hand, she stared at the tiny flashes of light, twinkling against the grass and branches. “What are the pretty lights Nana?.” The child’s nurse joined her at the window. There were so many tonight. “Those are fireflies child. They light the fairy’s way in the dark.” Taking a small hand, Nana led the girl to her bed. “Come. Tuck in tight and I will tell you a tale of an enchanted princess.” In a soft voice, Nana began the tale.

In a far away land, lived a beautiful
princess. One evening, as she watched from her tower window, a glowing ball of light danced
at the edge of the forest. Entranced by the hundreds of twinkling lights, she slipped from
her chamber, and ventured out into the night. The lights seemed to beckon, and before long,
she had followed them deep into the forest. The little lights surrounded her. As they glistened
in her hair and along her arms, she seemed to sparkle as one of them.
As it happened, a
wizard chanced to see this amazing sight, and determined to capture the beautiful girl
and her glittering companions. He cast a magical golden net over the princess and turned
her into a firefly, then whisked them all into his lantern where they glowed brighter than
ever. It also happened that this wizard was a boastful fellow, and he often told of his
amazing lantern.
One day, the blacksmith’s son overheard the wizard. The lad had watched
his father grow frail and weak at his labors and wished to find a way to ease his life. If he
could somehow acquire this marvelous lantern, perhaps a wealthy lord would buy it. As he followed
the wizard into the forest, he realized he had nothing to offer the wizard in exchange. The wizard
soon fell into a deep sleep. The lad crept to the lantern, wrapped it in his cloak to dim the light
and stole away into the night. When he was safely away, he unwrapped the lantern. There,
in the midst of the smaller fireflies, was a larger, more beautiful creature. She flew to
the lantern’s door and pleaded with him to release her. The lad feared to open the door
lest all the fireflies escape. As he watched her desperately fling herself against the door,
his conscience tugged at him. It had been wrong to steal the lantern, yet he could not return
these poor creatures to the wizard. So he opened the door and all the fireflies escaped into
the forest. All but one. As she flew through the door, the enchanted firefly resumed
her human form.
The blacksmith’s son returned the beautiful princess to her castle
and was richly rewarded for his kindness.

The child had not stirred once during the story and Nana had thought her small charge to be asleep. As she reached to put out the candle, a sleepy little voice asked, “And did the princess fall in love with the brave boy?”
Nana smiled as she kissed the child’s forehead. “That, dear one, is story for another night.”
