The
old abbey appeared deserted. Water etched statues stared sightlessly at the little pair
in the rafters. The delicate faery once again checked the little horsefly’s wing. The
crumbling, grinning gargoyle just under the edge of what little remained of the vaulted
roof was her favorite perch for such ministrations. “There now my small one. This looks
sturdy and well. You may now fly.” The evening star had just reached the tip of the moon
and again Medwyn mused, “If only I had a special magic.” Bright eyes questioning, the
little horsefly cocked his head,. “Do you not see?” she sighed, “All of the others have
something to offer. Miggles can dance on moonbeams, Alsprey can sing the lark from her
branch and Lindalwyd can weave wondrous treasures from spider’s silk and cow’s beard.”
Her sigh deepened, “I am simply ordinary.” Suddenly, the little creature launched itself
into the shadows. Wrapped in her wings, a forlorn Medwyn watched her little patient
disappear, then gazed again toward the heavens. She studied the star closely. If it
were truly the wishing star, hers had gone unanswered. The shadows lengthened across
the stone floor. With a final sigh Medwyn realized there would be no use in wishing
again. She stood, poised for the flight home. An eerie glow blossomed in the nave below.
Tiny trailing lights and crystal wings filled the abbey. The little horsefly tugged on
her hand, drawing Medwyn out of the shadows. All manner of winged creatures gathered
below and as one, they bowed before her.
In the soft flutter and buzz, a small voice
whispered, “Medwyn. There is not one among us who has not felt your gentle touch.
Do YOU not see? You have the magic of healing."
