The Unicorn of legend has maintained a hold on our imaginations since the first reported sightings in fourth century B.C. India. His fame spread through Arabia and into Europe, where the Medieval Unicorn is perhaps the most well known. He was the color of cream, shaped like a small horse, with cloven hoofs. He could purify water with his long spiraling pearled horn. Though he was a fierce creature, he was always drawn to innocence.

Long ago, two brothers sought the hand of fair maid Morgana. In the way of things, Charles the elder, was chosen by her father, as he would be Baron. This was fortunate, as it also happened the two were deeply in love. Envious, James the younger, entered into a pact with the dark forces. Charles was transformed into a horned beast, destined to hide in the forest, feared and hunted. The wizard Leodus took pity on the young lovers and created a matching pair of jeweled golden crosses. He placed one about the beast's neck and presented the other, disguised as a bride gift to Morgana. He also gave to her a dream. Morgana saw her beloved's face in a crystal pool. "Search for me. I hold the mate to that which you possess." As her wedding day approached, Morgana searched the forest one last time. She found herself in a secluded glade by the pool of her dream. Slowly, the small forest creatures crept from their hiding places to watch as the unicorn gently approached the maid. There, upon the beast's breast, glittered a jeweled golden cross. As she leaned forward, the sun glimmered against the waters. The unicorn touched his horn to the water and the face of her beloved shimmered and shifted in the ripples.
Perhaps the mystical, fierce, solitary beast and the innocent maid of legend have always sought their respective soul mate. And perhaps each found the other and in so doing, found peace.
