I think I am finally moved in!

I found a charming, fairly remote spot just north of Napa about two hours from everywhere I love; San Francisco, the ocean, the mountains and not the least of which – Wine Country. The night sky is divine. Truly. There is hardly any ambient light and I haven’t seen skies this pure and clear and full of stars in well, perhaps never. I have plenty of space for my studio, sewing room, and my new “lab” fits perfectly in a room downstairs. The view is spectacular and the kitchen is a chef’s dream. I am truly thrilled.

Marnie, our “Director of Hospitality” enjoys surveying her new domain. She spied her first deer and it was quite an observance. Graceful as wraiths, the delicate creatures appear and disappear silently as a sigh. Wonders continued as a huge flock of wild turkey wandered by shortly thereafter. Marnie had no words for that observance. She uttered a faint squeaky chirp and then fell mute in absolute awe. She has truly arrived in doggie wonderland.

Once I settled in after the move, the color and resin tests began and I am very pleased to announce the resin quality and color turned out as I hoped. It has been a fabulous adventure experimenting with the resin. All new molds were created and I am delighted with the quality of the resin. The finish is a soft matt with a hint of delicate translucency. The color is also wonderful. Of course, these dolls are all hand made and very slight variations will exist. However I will always try to maintain close color matches within a series and each series will have the color created to best suit the theme, costume and story. www.crawfordmanor.com will be updated as each new phase is completed.

The move was horrendous. I hope never to move again. There was so much “stuff”. It seemed like it took forever to settle in but then I remembered I was moving more than just a home. It was not just personal stuff but I was really moving a home, a business and a studio. Heavens!

Creating Dilema

I seem to have difficulty keeping my own work.

The fact that I have only two or three of the hundred’s of dolls I have created is truly horrifying to other artists. It appears I simply enjoy the creative process and am eager to move on to the next idea. However, I will not make that same mistake with my new dolls. From the very first design, I have kept samples of each step along the way.

I find inspiration almost anywhere – even standing in line at the grocery store can have its moments. I find inspiration in history and literature and I usually work to music, preferably Celtic or instrumental New Age artists playing guitar, piano, flute or harp. The lyrics in most vocals tend to be too distracting. My reading choices run the gamut from Jane Austen to Tom Clancy, older Gothic romance to Wilbur Smith. I don’t care for the traditional romance genre and my taste is somewhat offbeat. Other influences include art, film, old legends and fairy tales, music, old fashion plates, books collected on my travels and theater.

I have lists of ideas, names and stories I will never have time to do. The romantic elegance of times past is fascinating. I seem to naturally gravitate toward those styles. It is almost like sculpting with fabric.

I became known early on for the period styles but once I created my first fairy I was hooked on fantasy. Not surprisingly though, my fairies are often costumed in period styles. I am drawn to romantic, somewhat mysterious and even melancholy themes. I have a secret gothic vein and it blends well with everything else.

I wanted to create a doll which would reflect a sense of romance, fantasy and history. But I wanted this creation to be more than a doll. I felt she needed to be ethereal, graceful and able to pose.

My process of working bears a strong resemblance to “Which came first, the chicken or the egg.” I sometimes begin with no preconceived idea, and let the doll lead me. I often just pull out some fabrics and handle them and play with the colors and textures. I am a very tactile artist. I love the feel of fabrics and it often seems I am sculpting with the textiles. Sometimes the fabrics lead me into the concept. Sometimes the entire concept is in my mind when I begin.

After deciding on the costume, I gather the fabrics and trims and design the patterns (sometimes that process can be the most fun). Jewelry and accessory decisions are made. Often it is just a basic design and the detailing is added as I go along. I prefer hand sewing and the garments for all costumes are constructed with darts, set in sleeves, etc. Somewhere in there, a little story pops into my head and then the entire process blends together until the concept is completed. I insist on the best materials possible. The finished work should endure, so I choose whichever methods will insure this.

I would love to hear how you create?

Some Things Never Change

Welcome!

My Grandfather took this in 1955. Guess I have thoroughly dated myself here but he was an amazing photographer – as is my father.

I am just beginning the journey through this strange and exciting world of Blogs, and Tweets and Digital Diaries and I look forward to all the sharing and creative sparking that surely lies ahead.

My hope is this small blip on the vast ethernet map will become an outlet for my creative process. A journal of sorts. One that I hope you will enjoy and find useful both as a descriptive source for my small imaginings and as a place to share your own creative thoughts.

Many of you already know me as the creator of Crawford Manor – home to my elegant, beautifully scaled dolls fashioned from popular fashion dolls. I have been repainting, wigging and costuming Fashion Dolls for a little over ten years.

I am realizing a dream. To have my own original doll. I have finally been able to pluck her from my imaginings. I hope to share more details of this particularly wonderful development in my creative world soon, so please visit often and all will be revealed as it unfolds.
